Yarbrough in 1937. To many programmers he was a
visionary, the man that cleaned up top-40 radio and
made it lean and mean. To others, Drake is blamed
for killing "personality radio."
Whatever your feelings
about him, Bill Drake had an enormous impact not
only on top-40 radio, but on easy listening and
oldies formats as well. His nationally-syndicated
multi-hour specials such as "The History of Rock &
Roll" codified the "rockumentary" format still in
use today. And his automated programming services
for FM stations were also widely-heard.
