CRC was a jingle
company that was born in Dallas in 1955, according
to Don Worsham, jingle historian. The letters stood
for Commercial Recording Corporation but most people
knew it as simply CRC.
What did this company
have that no one else had? The services of Tom
Merriman, a part owner. Merriman, for those who
aren't familiar with the name, was the most
experienced jingle writer in Texas, and perhaps the
USA at the time. He would continue to write jingles
for the next 50 years, with literally tens of
thousands of IDs, commercials and film scores to his
credit over his lifetime.
His work for CRC was
groundbreaking, blending big band and rock
influences. With his broad knowledge of musical
genres, Merriman was equally at home with serious
orchestral styles, international flavors and novelty
musical categories.
While CRC never gained
the cache of PAMS or TM, its jingles were still a
part of the DNA of early top-40 radio. One could
visit almost any AM station in those early days and
find a CRC tape box in the program director's top
drawer.
